In the Victorian Era, women were known to have very little rights. Women didn’t have the right to own property. But how women were treated during the Industrial Revolution was normal. The Women’s suffrage movement gained momentum the last years of the Victorian era.
The right and privileges of women were limited because they were their husband’s property. Women had to go through some hard times back then like, the husband had complete ownership over his wife’s body. Especially when it came down to sex there was a contract to give herself to her husband as he desired. The men were so disrespectful and verbally abusive to their wives.

There was no worker compensation until after the Victorian era. And if you were too ill or injured to work meant you wasn’t able to pay rent and stay at the Victorian work house. Women that worked on factories or with heavy industry received less pay than men. Women were not allowed to receive the same wages as men. Pregnant women were allowed to work until birth and return when they were physically able. The things women went through was so bad and was address by many advocates. They came up with laws to better the condition of women which was a very slow process. A group was organized to stop men from beating their wives. It changed the marriage laws and the legal right of women to divorce and gain custody of the children. The husband had to prove that the wife was committing adultery and a women had to prove that her husband was involved incest, bigamy, and cruelty.
