Women's Role In Beowulf

Beowulf is a story of fighting, heroes, and medieval times. All of the people mentioned in this poem are men. In the medieval times, men were thought to be the dominant gender. They believed that women were the ones who stay home, take care of children, and make dinner. Men were the ones who fought, went into dangerous situations, and had the power. Men were the ones who came home with a story to tell and were tired from all the manly things they did that day. In this poem, women were not an important role at all. In fact, the only woman that was mentioned was Grendel’s mother of whom was made out to be a monster who lives in a swamp. In my opinion, the author made the monster a woman character because in that day in age, they thought the women were insignificant, maybe even of an evil descent. Throughout the poem, the men are mentioned as masculine, strong willed figures. Not once will you find a line where it indicates that a woman would be of any help or importance in a situation. …show more content…

It was more like a stage where men were the dominant gender and any other person was thought of as the lesser figure. This was probably so because they weren’t very advanced. They thought of muscles and height as a human instead of a heart and skin. In these times, the armor was heavy. Women couldn’t fight even if they wanted to therefore they were looked down upon. Heroes were thought to be the people who put on suits and fight monsters, not the people who sit home, take care of children, and cook for the men when they decide to come home. Not only was this a bad approach to a society’s approach of things but it wasn’t an accurate one
