Women's Roles During Anglo-Saxon And Medieval Times

Women played many roles during Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Times. Both of these time periods have made significant changes that we know of today. During this time women weren't really seen as “important” or “significant” which is really untrue. At both of these times in history women were the heart of everything. They were the pieces that the puzzle needed to be complete. Some may not of noticed it or think that, but women were and still are to do this. During this time period men were seen as the “Warriors” and “Head of Households”. Women were very overlooked and disregarded. Women really had a lot to do when you sit and look back, they were one of the main people to keep towns and families together. They had specific roles such as being the peacekeeper which at the time was called “peace weaver” for women. This meant that for certain tribes to have peace or be cordial with other rival tribes then women would have to marry a member from a rival tribe to stop the fighting and to save her town. Some people such as myself would see this as a huge sacrifice that can be seen as heroic. Sadly the peace weavers weren't always successful or lasting. The main role for women during Medieval time was childbearing and being devoted to their husbands. Young women grew up learning that you must obey and serve your husband no matter what. It is said by many historians that many customs of the Medieval time came from the Roman Catholic Church. Many women didn't have the good fortune of growing up into a wealthy family and having money.
