In Terrance Hayes’s poem “Mr. T-,” the speaker presents the actor Laurence Tureaud, also known as Mr. T, as a sellout and an unfavorable role model for the African American youth for constantly playing negative, stereotypical roles for a black man in order to achieve success in Hollywood. The speaker also characterizes Mr. T as enormous and simple-minded with a demeanor similar to an animal’s to further his mockery of Mr. T’s career. The speaker begins his commentary on the actor’s career by suggesting that The A-Team, the show Mr. T stars in, is racist by mentioning how he is “Sometimes drugged / & duffled (by white men) in a cockpit,” which seems to draw illusions to white men capturing and transporting slaves to new territories during the time of the slave trade (4-5).
In the 1880s, Cornelius and Mary Moore were a young couple starting a family in Canada. They would soon be facing great hardships, but throughout their struggles, the couple would continue to press on, in search of a better future. This perseverance would inspire future generations to pursue greater possibilities for themselves. In Canada, the Moores lived in modest homes without running water or electricity.
Class and gender/sexuality are complicated in “Drown” by Junot Díaz. Yunior and Beto are ex-best friends who are separated through the complications. Their relationship tenses up when Beto decides to better his life through education. At first glimpse, Yunior’s struggle with class and sexuality could be based within his homophobic fear. The typical understanding that Yunior’s unmotivated attitude stems from fear is flawed because it fails to recognize his stance to not change who he believes he is and where he is meant to be.
In John Updikes “A&P” story, I don’t feel that Sammy quits for just one reason—I also feel his actions where less of trying to impress the girls and more of his attempt to break the mold or cycle that he feels he has become apart of. When referencing the store, or the town and those who are part of the story Sammy references people as ‘sheep’ which is often used as a way to describe people who lack imagination, who follow/copy/mimic someone else. You hear that same tone as he describes the store and his town (cash-register-watchers, freeloaders, Big Tall Goony-Goony, etc) in somewhat of fantasy/imaginative manner as if the only way he can cope through the daily rituals of life, which has gotten to be mundane, is to narrate the events of his
The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio was filled with eye opening precepts. As I read the book I felt that one precept stood out most of all. This was the September precept “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”- Dr. Wayne Dyer. I fell this means that you should choose kindness over the ability to be right.
Target by Jasper Johns stands 66 x 66 in the Art Institute of Chicago (Figure 1). The large size of the painting draws the viewer in. The scale also makes it so the viewer is forced to look at the painting, it is not something that can be ignored. Johns created this piece in 1961, and it was one of many works in his Target series. Target was his last major work in this series and it ended up being the largest as well.
Auggie knew that would happen. When it was time for lunch, Auggie was very shocked because a girl named Summer sat with him at lunch. Auggie and Summer ended up becoming friends. Auggie and Jack became friends as well. Auggie has noticed that no one dares touch him or have any contact with him.
The novel ‘Nada’ written by Carmen Laforet is a twisted heart-breaking tale about a year in the life of the 18-year-old female protagonist Andrea. Throughout this year, Andrea spends in Barcelona with her relatives, she developed various relationships, both homosexual and heterosexual. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss Andrea’s highly affective homosexual relationships with her best friend Ena and her aunt Gloria and how she views and describes both woman differently. I will also briefly contrast her homosexual relationships with that of her heterosexual relationships with Pons and her uncle Román. I will begin with discussing Adrea’s relationship with Gloria, as this relationship began before her relationship with Ena did.
Auggie makes friends such as Jack Will, Julian Albans and Summer Dawson. The trailer used a montage to express how much Auggie has accepted himself and even added in the line at the end saying, “Dude this is after plastic surgery, it takes a lot to look this good”. Cotton Mather: Wonders of the Invisible World In this writing, Cotton Mather, a Puritan Theologian and a renowned reverend talks about his fears of the Christian religion being slowly obliterated from the country, which he believes is being taken over by the devil and his minions by the use of Witchcraft. In 1963 Cotton Mather was asked to create a literary piece, in defense of the persecutions, one year after the events of the Salem witch trials actually took place, where questionable events happened were depicted. This work was called the Invisible Wonders of the World. Throughout the writing, Mather is always depicting the devil as a real and tangible being (e.g. “invisible hands” and supernatural happenings).
In the short story, “Seventh Grade,” by Gary Soto, the author pokes fun at the seventh grade boys in the beginning of a school year. The main characters are Victor, Michael, Mr. Bueller, and Teresa, a girl Victor has a crush on. In the end, Victor learns that is it is always best to be himself. The author describes how Victor attempts to impress his dream girlfriend, Teresa.
Grateful is when someone shows that they are thankful. It could be that someone is thankful for an item that they have or their friends and family. In “The Jacket” by Gary Soto a boy receives a jacket that he is ungrateful about when he should be grateful for it. The boy asked for a bikers wear: black leather and silver studs. Except he receives a jacket the color of a day old guacamole.
The poem Truth, by Gwendolyn Brooks, has a lot of symbolism in it. Different things throughout the poem both represent parts of the Civil Rights movement as well as things that we can relate to our lives today. She did really well with her literary elements used, especially personification. This makes her writing more relatable and realistic in our minds to grasp. Truth is a wonderful poem full of all sorts of different literary elements.
Back then when I was little, Aaron, as an adolescent, always acted with a professional manner, while his parents continuously bragged about his academic achievements. I always thought that it made sense for someone like him to be well rounded at such a young age, since I knew how over the top his parents can be about school. They were those types of parents with the “because I said so” attitude, enforcing their rules through yelling and physical punishment. You could imagine everybody’s surprise when we found out that he ended up piercing his ears and later on getting a tattoo without his parent’s permission. The once courteous young man became involved in many different rebellious activities until one day later on he ran out of money to continue to live in his apartment.
