In order to eliminate the difficulty in unfortunate events, R.J. Palacio, the author of Wonder, uses humor to lessen the negative emotional impact. To begin with, upon visiting a school for the first time the principal of Beecher Prep, Mr. Tushman, humorously explains how a portrait that appears like a pumpkin is actually himself.
