Similarities and Differences between the Films
An apparent similarity in both Won’t Back Down and Children in America’s Schools is that they both focus on disadvantaged schools. The failing schools in both films can be described with some of the same characteristics, such as overcrowded classrooms, unmotivated teachers, insufficient funding, and lack of school resources. Children in America’s Schools begins by showing several schools in impoverished districts that are certainly not suitable learning environments for children. These schools have molded walls, collapsed ceilings, and torn textbooks compared to the wealthier schools districts that possess advanced facilities such as computer labs, Olympic sized pools, robotic labs and advance courses.

Children in America’s Schools tells the public that children that live in inner city/ urban areas do not have high goals for themselves. In a scene from the documentary, Jonathan Kozol interviews children from these impoverished communities on their views of their school and education in general. Some of the children responded by saying they do not see themselves as having a future and question the importance of being in school. Children who live in impoverished communities deal with crime on a regular basis, and believe that they will not amount to much. However, Children in America’s Schools also provides the public with positive views on teachers. The teachers in this documentary provide the students with the love and attention that they might not receive at home. These teachers are the heroes; they care about their wellbeing and safety in and out the school and view them as their own children. Which is a contrast to how Wont Back Down portrays some teachers; which is unmotivated and money
