The Fourteen Points, created by Woodrow Wilson, were designed to stop war from ever happening again. Announced to Congress on January 8, 1918, the author, Brian explains that this speech may have been his most important. The author also describes the Fourteen Points as, “the peace treaty ending World War I.” Despite many people agreeing with Wilson’s proposals, they viewed them as unrealistic to achieve. One emphasis throughout the points was ceasing to form secret alliances with other countries. Woodrow wanted all treaties between nations to be discussed publicly. The author states that the president thought that, “...minority groups should be allowed to determine their own governments.” Brian explains that some native groups were unwillingly forced into fight along side empires such as the Russian. Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian. When Wilson’s points were revealed, many nations who had been oppressed by strong countries felt like they would have a chance at freedom. January 1919 was when all the nations of the Allied forces came together for the Paris Peace Conference. The countries on the losing side however, weren’t invited. Leaders on the Allied side were interested in selfish gains. David George, Georges Clemenceau, and Vittorio Orlando wanted to get revenge on other countries. Peace was the last thing on their mind. Believing that their survival “depended on naval supremacy” Britain didn’t accept Wilson’s view on freedom of the seas. All-in-all, despite Wilson’s hard work on the Fourteen Points, they were not accepted. Many of the concepts had to be compromised.
