In 1919, representatives of the victorious allies gathered in Paris that was to draw up the peace treaties. They wanted to end the war, and construct a new Europe. The American college professor-turned-president Woodrow Wilson based, “his version of revolutionary change on the ideal of national self-determination” (p.813). Wilson envisioned that the new nation states would interact differently from the empire of the past. Wilsons fourteen points were considered the basic principles for a new world order after world war I. Wilson believed that freedom of the seas, freedom of trade, and open diplomacy, would be the three points of the fourteen points that will break down barriers and guarantee peace and prosperity among all. Despite, the fact that WWI was caused because of conflicts between the imperial powers of Europe, the outcome of WWI led to the weakling of direct imperial powers. “The era before WWI it was the standard in Europe countries with more imperial colonies to be seen as the strongest powers of the continent. The most developed countries were all competing to get African colonies, because it contained inexpensive labor and a very cheap way to produce goods. WWI weakened imperial powers, because the war caused them to spend loads of money. By the tie WWI ended most of Europe was impacted financially, geographically, socially, politically, and culturally. However, imperial influence changed differently in each country to different extents. The treaty of Versailles severely weakened Germany’s military force. With the weakling of the imperialist powers during the world wars, it leads to a demise of these nations’ abilities to successfully directly rule their colonies. People in the colonies began to campaign their rights, in which it led to many specific independent movements.
