When World War I began, Americans favored President Woodrow Wilson’s stand for remaining neutral. The United States and Britain were allies, so when Germany attempted to quarantine the British Isles tension arose between Germany and the United States. Germany was attacking ships that were traveling to Britain and had attacked and damaged and sunk several U.S. ships. In February 1915, Germany announced it would attack any ships in the waters around Britain.
There were two major events that took place that sent the United States into WWI. Before these events took place, America wanted to stay neutral with thoughts and action. On May 7, 1915, a German submarine, called U-boats, torpedoed and sank a British passenger liner Lusitania. About 1,198 lives were lost including 128 Americans. Many Americans were shocked and anger about this act and called it “mass murder and piracy”(671).

Germany’s broken policies and the decoded Zimmerman note were the major causes of Woodrow Wilson’s declaration of war. When the beginning of World War I came around, it was a very difficult time for everyone. President Wilson pledged a state of neutrality on behalf of the United States and had a vast majority of Americans backing him up in the meantime. However, it wasn’t long until tension started to rise up in America
On April 2, 1917, the 28th president of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson, delivered a speech before the Congress in order to declare war against Germany. This period of history represents the first worldwide conflict and opposes the Allied forces of the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Japan against the Central Powers of Germany, Bulgaria, the Austrian-Hungarian empire, and the Ottoman empire. Woodrow Wilson involved the United States, which was originally neutral at the beginning of World War I when the Germans attacked and sank the Lusitania, a ship transporting ammunition to the allies but also American citizens. More importantly, in his speech, Woodrow Wilson explicitly states his opinion and purpose that ' 'the world must be made safe for democracy ' ' (Voices of Freedom 107) and that the immediate contribution of his nation to World War I would bring "peace and justice" (Voices of Freedom 105) to the world, as well as the end of the threatening expansion of
Throughout 1916 the Americans held fast to the hope of not becoming involved in the war. However, there hopes slowly started to fade as they began to realize that the war was going to happen. Not only did Woodrow Wilson believe that the war was the answer to America’s problem, he also expected Americans to jump into supporting the war. When American’s disagreed with the war, the government began to forcefully make them agree.
The man in the picture above is Woodrow Wilson. He is creator of the fourteen points, which is the topic for my assignment. The fourteen points were created during the first world war. They called for a peaceful end to world war 1. Woodrow Wilson received the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize, as the fourteen points were successful in peacefully ending the war.
Wilson 's declaration of war expresses that Germany was threat to the world. They planned to turn everyone’s government to their own. There were many ways they tried to take control and some of which are German spies and submarine warfare. Germany used spies to keep an eye on the other county and do to this many countries became worried that their freedom was being stolen. Germany struck fear into people and threatened democracy because of their controlling nature with other countries.
Woodrow Wilson "Tell me what is right and I will fight for it" is something Woodrow Wilson would say. A person who made a huge impact on history is Woodrow Wilson. Wilson had a big impact on everyone, men and women. Wilson had wonderful ideas for peace in the United States of America. The note sent to Germany following the sinking of the Lusitania, on which American travelers were executed, was significantly harsher than the note sent to Britain, which had imprudently put military gear on traveler liners for transport. In fact, the note was unneutral to the point that it encouraged the abdication of William Jennings Bryan, who was then Wilson's secretary of state.14 Yet, when war was at long last proclaimed, the United States did not join the organization together, but rather joined as a "related power" in order to keep its prevalent refinement from the dim forces of Europe. The United States was set for spare the
Americans initially favored neutrality, but events like the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmermann telegram provoked the U.S. to join the war in support of the Allies (Shi and Tindall 754-757). Less obvious factors, such as nationalism, imperialism, and business opportunity, also contributed to the war. The war ended in 1918 after immense bloodshed, but President Wilson failed to get the Treaty of Versailles ratified by the Senate (Shi and Tindall 773). As a result of the war, Europe was significantly weakened, harsh punishments were imposed on Germany that later led to WWII, and America emerged with a strong economy as a dominant world power (Shi and Tindall
President Woodrow Wilson was the last of the Progressive Presidents and as such caused great economic, political and social change. He served between 1913 and 1921 during which he imposed economic change through reforms, both national and international political change and a change in the role of women, giving them the right to vote. The effects of Wilsons presidency created abundant change within American society that had long lasting impacts. Political change was imminent in Wilsons second term as he was given emergency presidential power to, in some cases, bypass Congress, to speed up the law-making process. For example, he imposed the Selective Services Act in 1917 which authorised conscription in the US so that the military could be built up quickly and would not have to rely wholly on volunteers; according to Khan Academy this was well received by the American public as they were incredibly patriotic and believed it was their responsibility to support their nation, as such few men dodged.
