French painter Gustave Courbet named this movement Realism. In literature, Realism represents real-life events and conflicts; detailed Realism shapes human characters through Naturalism. Throughout the Realism period, writers used gender roles, economic struggle, and the effect of the environment to develop human characters within their stories.
Realism is a way of thinking that allows people to express themselves using a real life approach this became very popular among African Americans. After embracing the new Negro approach. There were many different styles of writing introduced during the time frame of when World War I began in 1865 and to the end of World War II. Pierre Bourdieu was a French philosopher, sociologist, and anthropologist who came up with the concepts of habitus, cultural capital, and field. Social realism is of great difference to a literally similar term, socialist realism. Although the artwork of both two concepts do make certain focuses on the working class, not to be confused with socialist realism, the development of social realism has less relation to the communist parties and it is not the art form introduced and institutionalized in relations to the former Soviet Union.
