Working to Assure Academic Success
A child’s first source of an education is not their pre-school teacher or their kindergarten teacher. Parents play the most important role in the developing of their child’s basic skills before they attend their first year of school, which in most cases is kindergarten. From the moment a child is born to the time they are about 3-years-old, parents play a crucial role in guiding their children. During this stage the infant begins to walk, talk, and they start to become conscious and curious about their surroundings. As the child becomes aware of everything around them, their ability to retain information increases and this is when they begin to learn how to count and to recognize the letters, depending on the level of parental guidance. The interactions a child experiences in their early years allows them to expand their vocabulary, they develop a self-esteem as a reflection of what they see, and they are able to build their first friendships. Ultimately, the early years are important because it is the stage in which the children attain the skills that will serve to create a solid foundation for later learning. Parent engagement at the earlier stages of children’s preliminary education is crucial in order to develop their prosocial behavior, a high self-esteem, and to create a solid foundation for the child’s academic success.
