Many programs have been set up by the United States Government in order to help poverty levels drop, and better the lives of those in poverty. People living in poor conditions often are unhealthy, as they do not have the resources to live to their fullest potential. In America, for a three person household, the poverty line is equal or lesser than $20,090 (2015 Poverty Guidelines). In 1935, on April 8th, the U.S. Government enacted the Works Progress Administration, given $4.9 billion dollars to make it work. The Works Progress Administration, or WPA was intended to hire millions of people to better our country. These jobs included creating/improving roads, auditoriums, museums, parks, swimming pools, and many other projects used to create more beautiful and better places to live. At its peak, the administration had provided paid jobs for three million men and women. But between 1935-1943, the WPA provided more than 8 million jobs. President Franklin D. Roosevelt first called for a four day national holiday to keep people from withdrawing from banks. This was on March 5, 1933, the day after he gave his inaugural address on Capitol Plaza. FDR spared no time to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish, so along with his four day holiday, he reorganized the banks and shut down ones that were “insolvent.” His next step was to end Prohibition. He then issued the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, which allowed the building of dams along the Tennessee River and inexpensive water-powered generators to produce more energy.
