In the Canadian society we are blessed to be a community of accepting people. In wake of social issues the world is facing today such as appropriation of certain cultures, discrimination against a certain race and many more. The play Calpurnia makes us truly examine and think about what is happening in the world while addressing real world issues. The play that’s about and revolves around a wealthy Jamaican-Canadian woman named Julie has never truly experienced racism and prejudice against her, is writing a play about a house made in the 1930s. Popeye’s is a chicken fast food restaurant that originated in Louisiana, the southern part of the United States. Popeye’s advertises many of their food as Cajun cuisine. The term Cajun cuisine came from what the people who are decedents of the Acadians were called once they arrived in the southern part of America. Because the Cajuns weren’t originally from south, they adapted their cooking to their surroundings; they have a rich variety of food from seafood, jambalaya, rice dishes and even incorporating many spices to their food such as cayenne and black pepper. The dishes Julie chose to present at the dinner weren’t an accurate representation of what people from the south eat. Julie did not care to find out about what they eat and the history behind it and just assumed that chicken, biscuits, a few greens and a meringue pie represent everything that southern people eat. Julie’s negative analysis on southern cuisine makes her prejudice because she didn’t take the time to learn about many different food options that the southern culture has to
