The cause that made the MAIN causes come into play was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, of Austria-Hungary. This was the immediate cause of World War I. On June 28 of 1914, the Archduke and his wife was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand while they were in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The Black Hand's first attempt to killing the Archduke failed when the driver of the car avoided a bomb that was thrown at them. However, Gavrilo Princip, one of the members of the Black Hand, shot and killed both the Archduke and his wife later that day.
