As the First World War came to a close, the creation of the Treaty of Versailles increased tension between the Allied Powers (especially the United States, France, United Kingdom and Italy) and Germany as well as Germany’s government and their own citizens. Germany was harshly punished for their actions in World War 1 and is displayed by their post war effects such as having a failed economy, frail military and a loss in government power. Furthermore, Germany experienced an economic depression where millions of people were unemployed, starved and died. (Document 1) Before this new national policy was established, a men’s traditional role was to work and financially provide for their family. They have gained a new responsibility and must contribute to this war for their nation. As almost all men now partake in the military, there is an empty role in a family that needs to be filled. Women are now left to fill in the place of men to work and provide for their family. The government is encouraging all women to take this new opportunity in the workforce and states that the more women who work, the war will end quicker. (Document 4) Women have fought for their equal rights previously in the workforce over the past years and this is their chance to obtain it and prove that they can accomplish equal work as men. Another transformation in the United States is the production of new technology which includes atomic energy, transportation, power, illumination and medicine. (Document 7) This world war was heavily destructive to the United States as it led to a demand for more advanced technology to support the war and help relieve burden from Americans at home. After the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor, the government did not trust any Japanese descent living in the United States, even those who were U.S. citizens. President Roosevent established Executive Order 9066 which forced all people of Japanese ancestry into concentration camps. These camps were penitentiaries with armed guards, towers with spotlights and barbed wire fences. Concentration camps were extremely unsanitary and the food that was given to them were not fresh. (Document 2) Even though the Japanese people were U.S citizens and were innocent, the United States were afraid that they were spies who were working for Japan and sending them information, they sent all men, women and children to these cruel camps with ruthless treatment. Discrimination against African Americans was a problem that lasted countless years. African Americans were brutally mistreated just because of the color of their skin and white people believed that they were superior to them. Due to their large population in the nation and the pressure from the NAACP, President Roosevelt promised that African Americans would be enlisted in the military for the war.
