World War I (WWI) is one of the biggest wars fought across the globe. The war was fought from 1914-1918 with some of the biggest countries across the globe such as the United States of America and Germany. This world war caused many civilians across the globe to fall into depression and disillusionment. Civilians lost hope in their leaders. However, what were the main causes that led to such a big war affecting millions across the globe to occur? World War I was caused due to the fact that so many countries around the globe got involved in the war when it was very unnecessary for them to do so. Austria-Hungary then proceeded to send a letter to Serbia asking their government to put an end to these protests that were going against their monarchy. In spite of that being done, the Austrian-Hungarian government still saw no changes, “. . . . the Royal Serbian Government has done nothing to repress these movements.” (Document 3.) Five days after this letter was written, the ArchDuke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie were killed. Austria-Hungary then blamed Russia as the person that killed the ArchDuke and his wife was a Russian person. The Russian government was fully responsible for the killing of the ArchDuke and his wife however, there was a reason behind it. The reason why Russia did this was because Russia wanted to provoke Austria-Hungary into declaring war against Serbia, which Austria-Hungary ended up doing. As soon as Germany gave Austria-Hungary the “blank check”, Austria-Hungary declared war against Russia, which was a big mistake in the long run as this war triggered World War I to occur.
