World War One started on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. World War One was also known as The Great War. The war was a destructive battle because twenty million people were hurt and fifteen million people died. World War one motivated many artists, poets, and people in the music industry. During World War One, artwork was used in various ways. It was used to express people's feelings toward the war. Music was another way to find out how people react when they found out that their lives were going to be making some adjustments. Many artists focus on their experience of World War One. An example of a song that was used during World War One was used to be able to persuade men to join the army. The song is called Your King and Country Want You. This song send many messages such as convincing women to let their men go to war to protect their county, enlisting men, and humiliate men that didn’t acknowledge this song. Lieutenant Gitz Rice was known as composing the popular songs during World War One. He was a Canadian composer and composed a song called He Will Always Remember the Little Things You Do. This song is about being able to give support to the women that were in the war. John C. McFadden and Walter St. J. Miller compose songs to the men that were not part of the war. Millers song is called “If we cannot do the fighting we can pay” meaning that music is meant for the men who do not choose to fight for their country, to give money. A popular song during the First World War was “A Long Way to Tipperary” composed by Jack Judge and Harry Williams. The Belgium and France area were the battlefields that created the Western Front.
