Many people thought after World War I, WWI, there would not be any more wars, which is why they nicknamed it “The War to End all Wars”, but that was not the case. It could have been the war to end all wars if only they had listen to President Woodrow Wilson’s “Fourteen Point”. If the winning allies, France, Great Britain, and Russia, did not take all of Germany’s land and made them pay the war debt, which made them go bankrupt, Adolf Hitler, the chancellor of Germany after WWI, would not have tried to take over the world. Many of the world’s superpowers did not intervene in Hitler’s misfits because they were still in an economic recovery and did not want to make matters worse. On September 17, 1939, Russia quickly invaded from the east, dividing Poland into two. Poland was attacked from both sides, so it was not long until it fell under their control, by the end of 1939 they had total control over the country. Russia then moved to the northern part of Europe, invading countries, such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and defeated a resistant Finland in the Russo-Finish War. Many people in the media referred to the war as a “phony war”, not because it was fake, but because it’s been six months since Germany invaded Poland, and there were no military actions on the behalf of Germany and the allies from the west. However, there were many naval battles against the Germans and the British, sinking over a 100 vessels in the first six months of the war. Germany used U-boat submarines, striking merchant shipping bound for Britain. This had come as a surprise to the US. They attacked because they did not want the US to intervene in their plan to take military action. They were planning to take over Great Britain, Netherland and The United States’ overseas colonies, places like Malaya, Singapore, the Philippines and Hong Kong. The US was so furious that they entered the war, because this attack on Pearl Harbor served to unify American public opinion in favor of entering World War II, and on December 8, 1941, Congress declared war on Japan the day after this surprise attack with only one dissenting vote, shortly causing Germany and the other Axis Powers to promptly declared war against the United States. This not only affected Japan, but also Japanese Americans. Under the Executive Order 9066 the US created internment camps, where typical Japanese Americans were placed. Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan had planned yet another surprise attack on the US at Midway island, but US intelligence were able to detect their plans and was able to equip upon their arrival. After many Japanese victories, the U.S. Pacific Fleet won the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Historians believe that the Battle of Midway proved to be a turning point in the war.
