Have you ever wondered when things like tanks, poison gas or submarines were invented or how strategies such as using pigeons to send messages or trench warfare came to be? World War One, also referred to as “The Great War” before World War Two, Had many new technological advances and strategy improvements that shaped warfare today and changed the tides of the war in America's favor. Although using pigeons to send messages was not a new idea, being used since Ancient Egypt, it was one of the safest ways to send messages without them getting intercepted. Tanks were a great counter for trench warfare because they could drive over them while shooting down into the trenches. The first tanks went only four miles per hour at top speed but were effective on the battlefield. The tank had heavy weapons and heavy armor. As time and technology progressed tanks’ engines were becoming stronger and faster. A major problem with tanks is that one third of them would not even start. (Terrell). This shows that tanks were unreliable. This leads many people to believe that the tanks were made hastily and were bad quality because of the demand. In conclusion in Word War One tanks were very useful but could be unreliable and slow at some times. The U-Boat was one of the first submarines. The U-Boat could submerge under water and fire missiles. People tried to camouflage their ships from the U-Boats’ radar but it was unsuccessful. But they did use different ship patterns to make their ship look bigger or smaller than it actually was. They also would put fake bridges, anchors or blocks to confuse the enemy. (Wilmot). This shows that U-Boats were a huge threat in World War One. This leads many people to believe that most radar and underwater vision was not very good. In conclusion U-Boats were a good weapon that could do decent damage to enemy
