Timeline 1750 – 1920 1914-1918 – World War 1 World war 1 started on the 28th of July 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918. It is also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars. The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, who was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. He was killed by Yugoslav in Sarajevo. By the time the war ended over 16 million people were killed, which included 10 million military personal and over 6 million civilians. Around 11% of France’s population was killed or wounded. During World War 1 dogs were used to deliver messages in capsules. They also carried and placed telegraph wires. Due to the weakness of France and its government when Napoleon came it was very easy for him to take control. Before the French Revolution, France was divided into social groups which were called ‘Estates’. The darkest part of the French Revolution was called the Reign of Terror, which went from 1793 to 1794. During this time, a man named Robespierre lead the National Convention and the Committee of Public Safety. He wanted to get rid of any opposition to the revolution, so he called for a rule of ‘Terror’. The end of the French Revolution changed the world in the terms that it changed the way that people thought and the French Revolution also brought new government systems too, such as democracy and socialism, which changed the world. 1769 – James Watt invents the steam engine The Watt steam engine was the first of its kind to use separate condensers. The steam engine was original a steam-driven pump which was used to draw water from the mines. James Watt improved on the design of the stem engine from 1712 by adding a separate chamber to condense steam, which allowed the machine to work at all times.
