World War II started in 1939 and ended in 1945. The war was mainly fought in Europe and parts of Asia. The Axis powers were Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. The Allied powers were the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union, Belgium, Australia, Canada, Greece, New Zealand, China, Norway, Poland, and Brazil. The United States joined World War II on December 8, 1941, because the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The actual bombing took place on December 7, 1941, the United states declared war and the Japanese one day after the attack. The first cause of World War II was the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles, was signed on June 28, 1919 at the end of World War I as a peace treaty, between the Allied powers and Germany. The treaty of Versailles set new boundaries for Germany and took away their territory. Germany was forced to give up the region of Eupen-Malmedy to Belgium, Alsace-Lorraine back to France, land to Poland, Memel to Lithuania, and large portions of Schleswig to Denmark. Germany lost around twenty-five thousand miles of territory. Germany had a limit on how many planes they could manufacture, submarines, and ships. The demilitarization of the Rhineland and a ban on military enlistment, all air forces, and combat gasses; they capped the number of enrollments in the navy, army, and the amount of ammunition they could buy. The right of aerial spying over Germany for the Allies and international control of German ports, rivers, and railways to guarantee Central European countries easy access to the sea, were all part of the treaty. Germany was forced to pay five billion dollars. In 1924 and 1929 Germany agreed to pay reparations under the Dawes Plan and the Young Plan, but the Great depression caused them to cancel the reparation of cities. Another restriction on germany was a limited population and a limited amount of domestic police. Germany was now very poor, very small military, a small police force, and missing land.
