Imagine if you were a Jew during World War 2, how would you feel having to hide your face in public and not get to eat because you need a ration card. Don’t know how you would feel, well you would probably be looking for a place to hide and food, you also might be looking for a new life somewhere else. And if you were lucky enough you found someone who would help. Like Corrie ten Boom and her family who got ration cards and helped bring Jews to safe places one including her own home. Or maybe Oskar Schindler would help you, he joined the Nazi party and bought a factory in Poland where he saved and protected over 1,000 Jews. Today I will talk about one other Leader named Chiune Sugihara who was a Japanese diplomat who helped thousands of Jews escape Lithuania, about 6,000 Jews to be exact. These three people and many more saved more than tens of thousands of Jews during World War 2 and it is time they be remembered. First I will be talking about Corrie ten Boom. It all started when the Nazi’s were threatening to invade Lithuania and the jews then wanting visas to escape. Chinue then disobeyed his bosses and issued thousands of visas cards for the Jews. For a total of twenty nine days he and his wife would stay up all night writing out the visas. Later Chinue was transferred to Prague from 1941-1942, then he was transferred to Bucharest from 1942-1944. Finally when the Soviets invaded Romania Chinue and his family were taken to a prison camp for a total of 18 months. They all eventually returned to Japan in 1946, and it is there that a foreign officer told him to resign from what they figured was handing out unauthorized visas.
