World war one was one of the most gruesome wars in all of humanity's history. It was caused by four major factors. First was the aggressive nationalism of each country, second was the the intense love for militarism by each nation, third was the making of alliances between nations in case of war, finally the event that caused a declaration of war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand. This all led to a four year was that included the world's biggest military powers to go against one another. One of these powers that fought in the war is the United States of America. Although this may be true, it did not prevent the number of American soldier casualties to be a staggering number. In total, the United States military had suffered an enormous sum of 284,580 casualties from the war (Document 2). Many soldiers would die in action and others would die in a more painful manner from infected wounds, loss of blood, diseases and more. Soldiers would have to face the horrible conditions of trench warfare and sneak attacks. These attacks often cause injuries that would force doctors to amputate the soldier's legs, hands ,arms or other regions of the body. Due to the lack of antibiotics, many soldiers would get their wounds infected and suffer from painful diseases for long periods of times. These tremendous numbers of soldiers did not come from voluntary civilians who had enlisted in the army. Instead, the United States had ordered for there to be a draft for more soldiers in order to increase military size and have a fighting chance against the massive armies of the enemy. The draft for soldiers had caused for families to break apart and women to lose their husbands. Many soldiers would never make it home to see their children again. Furthermore, the soldiers who had survived but had been amputated could never live normally due to the restrictions that come with a handicapped life. In final analysis, World War I had affected soldiers lives greatly in many startling ways. In sum, the civilian and military lives of the United States had been affected dramatically due to World War I. This long lasting war had affected the gender roles women had before the war, the economy of the United States as well as the way people conserved food. In addition, the war changed and took the lives of many men who fought in the war. Many lives were lost, many were also changed, the United States had very clearly flourished as a different country because of this
