World War Z shows the reader throughout the story that bad things can happen, and sometimes you have to fight to survive. This story is about a family that gets stuck in a very unusual traffic jam. After being stuck in traffic for a time, the whole city breaks out with a deadly virus that turns people into zombies. Due to the extreme zombie outbreak, the healthy people go on a killing spree to try to eliminate the virus for good. World War Z is truly an amazing book because the author, Max Brooks, makes it very easy to predict if the virus will get eliminated, clarifying why Gerry leaves to fight the zombies, why the family stays in the bunker, and to characterize Gerry, the main character. The two main characteristics about him are, his determination and how he is very caring. Gerry shows great determination in everything he does throughout the whole story. For instance, immediately after the zombie outbreak begins, Gerry showed his determination by running his family to a large vehicle to drive them to safety. Although it was tough to drive to safely, he was determined to save his family. Also, he talked to the military to see if he was able to help fight the infected people to try to end the virus from spreading world wide: “Every human being we save is one less zombie to fight.” (Brooks 217). Thankfully they agreed to let him help fight. The same night, Gerry said his goodbyes to his family and hops on a plane. Without Gerry's determination to keep his family safe, the zombie outbreak would still be growing. The other prevalent characteristic is that Gerry is very caring. For example, he always makes sure people get to safety before he shows concern for himself. At the beginning of the story, Gerry makes sure his family and others get to safety and their needs are met before his own. Also, when Gerry is inside the very tall wall and the zombies climb over it, he immediately shows people the way to safety then quickly goes back to help more people. Finally, whenever there was a chance for Gerry to call and talk to his family while he was away fighting the zombies, he would.
