The First Airplane
Inventors, entrepreneurs, and two of the greatest minds of the 20th century, the Wright Brothers, whom are the ones who impacted the world with the invention of the airplane. As well known Aeronautic Inventors, the Wright Brothers inspired America and the world that they could do the impossible by taking people to the sky. They left a lasting legacy by creating the 1st propelled airplane. The origin of the Wrights call to change started in their youth from a toy. Wilbur, who was just as important in creating the airplane as Orville, was born in 1867 in Millville, Indiana.(encylopedia 328) In high school Wilbur´s hope of attending Yale were gone and did not receive his diploma and went into depression.

Before creating the airplane, the brothers followed the progress of a famous airplane maker called Otto Lilienthal. ”When Lilienthal died in a glider crash, the brothers decided to start their own experiments with flight.” (history.com) Although they did not have a lot of money their pursuits were paid by their bicycle business, which was run by Bill Tate when they were gone. Although the business did not make a lot of money it was more than enough to sustain them and their ideas. The first flight flew a distance of 120 feet in 12 seconds in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This plane was to never fly again. Although this may sound like a short time this was the first time someone even flew that far and for that time. “The brothers tossed a coin to see who would first test the Wright Flyer on the sands of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.” (history.com) After the first flight, Wilbur went to Europe for hopes of a better chance of selling their new invention because of the criticism in America. Meanwhile, back in America, Orville got involved in the first fatal aviation accident in which his passenger was killed. Most of the world loved the Wrights, but still had opposers in all stages of their life.
Not everyone was with the idea of flight the Wrights had to deal with many opposing ideas and beliefs. According to the book, the Wright Brothers, The people of Kitty Hawk called the brothers “dreamers.” They also thought the Wrights were ¨playing with God.¨ Another example of criticism was in Dayton, Ohio were the press referred to the Wrights invention as ¨fake.¨ After the press saw the invention work they believed them, but still there was criticism.
