Have you ever wanted to soar through the air like a bird? Well, the Wright Brothers made this possible with their flying machine. Nowadays, airplanes are everywhere; the world would be a completely different place without them. We wouldn't be able to land on the moon, technology would not have advanced as fast, and Orville and Wilbur Wright produced the first successful heavier-than-air piloted plane in 1903. They are the greatest historical figures of all time because they revolutionized transportation by making it safer and easier, they started a new era of warfare, they allowed space travel to be possible, and they demonstrated the American Dream. The Wright Brothers’ had a interesting life that led to the inspiration of their inventions …show more content…
The Wright Flyer evolved into fighter planes that were first scene in World War I. Dr. Richard Stimson explains how, “[i]n 1909, the Wright Brothers sold the first airplane to the U.S. Army” (Stimson). At first, the planes were used to observe the enemy. Orville believed that his invention would end World War 1. If the Allies could see the enemy movements, then they would know where to send the troops. By the end of the war, the plains were used to carry bombs. Orville Wright commented that, “The aeroplane has made war so terrible that I do not believe any country will again care to start a war” (Stimson). His initial idea of peace was quickly squashed when the Germans began bombing the allies. In the Wright Brothers, Quentin Reynolds explains the thoughts of the generals that attended the famous testing in front of Theodore Roosevelt when he pronounces, “[t]his airplane could carry a 180-pound passenger in addition to its pilot. That meant it could carry a 180-pound bomb. Perhaps it could carry more than one bomb” (Reynolds 180-181). Orville believed that war would end because of peace, but his invention caused a new era of war machines. The Wright Brothers had a huge influence on the outcome of World War I, and that was only the …show more content…
They taught themselves how to make the world’s first airplane even when neither of them had completed any formal education. They went from working at bicycle store to changing the world. American dream is defined as, “a happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the U.S. especially by working hard and becoming successful” (The American Dream). Orville and Wilbur Wright are a success story of this. Immigrants came from all around in the late 1800s to get a chance at a better life in America. The idea of rising from nothing died as time passed; however the Wright Brothers proved that the American dream was not just a saying. They caused other inventors to follow in their footsteps. New planes evolved from the Wright Flyer and eventually turned into the machines we have
