When trying to discuss what type of genre is found in a television clip, it becomes complicated especially in the concept of format, (Fulton, et al., 2005). When we refer to a format in television, can denote both the sort of program prepared and the medium in which it is made, such as film or videotape. The video is more like a quiz show whereby, there is one person asking questions, and the other is responding to the questions. Some competition programs and discussion programs mostly fall under this type of genre in television shows. They all are dialogues between two people or participants. A dialogue is a discussion between two or more persons, (Dictionary.com, 2014). The reporter from the video entitled ‘'Hard Choices' recalls memories, regrets from Clinton's State years’ is merely just informing the audience or viewer of the clip what was happening during the discussion. Just as a typical dialogue, the characteristics of these clips represent similarities of the characteristics of a dialogue.
A dialogue normally has an element of exchange it. This means that when one person talks, the other waits for the turn to contribute to the discussion. They also exchange words or questions with each other expecting direct answers. From these first set of clips, the participants are two - Hillary Clinton and the Interviewer (reporter). They exchange turns in speaking or answering questions based on the discussion topic. In our set of videos, Hillary Clinton is trying to build relations with the American citizens. She might have been misquoted by her rivals, enemies or the media concerning certain issues or decisions made in the past. She takes the opportunity to try to build relations with the American citizens so that she may achieve her agendas.
In a dialogue, the two parties always try to understand each other. This shall enable them figure out what to question next or what to suggest next. In the first set of clips, all the participants are trying to understand each other. The participants need to take notes or memorize the other party’s opinions. When the interviewer tables a question for Hillary Clinton to answer, Clinton has to be keen to understand the question in the interviewer’s context. Similarly, the interviewer has to keenly listen and understand in order to determine whether the question was exhaustively answered.
Just as in a dialogue, the first set of clips is trying to reach across a certain audience. Well, in any discussion, there is always a target audience. In the absence of an audience, the discussion is merely a conversation between two or more people exchanging ideas or thoughts.
