In the memoir’’ How to write a memoir’’, written by William Zinsser, Zinsser goes into specific detail for beginner memoir writers on how do you write a memoir. He encourages each of them to ‘’ Be themselves’’,’’ Tell their own story and they should write about what they want’’, and ‘’ Think small, don’t over think what you are writing about. ’’(Zinsser’s memoir pages 2,4,6) This advice tells beginner memoir writer to express who you are and say as much as you would like to say. In the memoir ‘’ Bad Boy’’, Walter Dean Myers gives a lot of insight on what his childhood was like.
In the story I read “How to Write a Memoir,” William Zinsser gave very important advice. In the article William Zinsser only give three advice. The three advice William Zinsser gives us are “be yourself,” “speak freely,” and “think small.” William Zinsser gave good advice about “be yourself.” In the story I read “Knucklehead” my author “Jon Scienszka” follows that advice.
The memoir can be relatable to young adults, as young adults face many challenges growing up. Young adults face a plethora of issues and to know that they’re not alone , and somebody else faced the same problems or even worse problems ,may help the youth find this memoir relatable. The entire memoir is about Jeannette struggling of her irrational family. Jeanette family never stayed in one place and when they did the conditions were poor. Jeannette mentioned “Instead of beds, we kids each slept on a cardboard box, like the ones refrigerator get delivered in”.

Connie was often criticized by her mother who told her to “stop gawking at [her]self” (Oates,1) This criticism towards one’s own daughter demonstrates that Connie and her mother do not have a healthy relationship. Her mother always talks of Connie’s sister, June, whom Connie is tired of “hear[ing] praised all the time” (Oates, 1). Connie’s thoughts of June portray Connie’s jealousy towards her and her mother’s praise and acceptance.
