Her hands were still shaking when the flashing red and blue lights announced the arrival of the police. The brisk night air did little to cool the hot ball of fear that still sat in her stomach, but it helped to dry the tears that were still lingering on her cheeks. She was alone and scared when the officers approached her, and she was hoping to find a kind face and a listening ear as she told her story. She was still just a girl, and at only 17, she had big dreams and hope for the future. She had been here, homeless, for a week and had regretted her decision to leave her family in L.A. from the first day. It was cold here, and even in the middle of summer the wind came in off the great lakes and brought a chill with it that went into your bones. She knew that she would have to work hard to make something of herself, but she was willing. All she had on her when she came to this place was one suitcase, and whatever was on her body. Of course, there was less on her body now, and that is why the police were here. She could still feel the way the cool metal of the gun felt when it was pressed into her chest. She could still hear the deep voice of the man who was driving the car as he pulled her gold chain off of her neck. It kept catching on her earrings, and he kept pulling. Despite the blood, despite her sobs and despite her everything, he kept pulling. She knows that he had someone else with him, and that person must have had pity on her because she remembers a man saying “Just forget about it, just leave her”. The police had left their car and were making their way toward her. She smiled, hoping to find some kindness from the law enforcers she had been brought up to trust, and her smile was returned with abrupt
