I have been handicapping and betting on harness racing for 30 years, but this wasn’t always the case. I had been a fan of thoroughbred racing for some time but showed no interest in harness racing. Living in Southern California meant that I was experiencing top quality thoroughbred racing. Harness racing, on the other hand, seemed to be a sport that was losing interest with the public. Harness racing at Hollywood Park had come to an end. But in the early 1980s, there was resurgence in harness racing. More racing dates had been assigned to Los Alamitos, and since I lived close by, I decided to take a first-hand look at harness racing.

Just as casinos have an advantage in the games they offer, I too had an advantage over harness racing, and my handicapping became only a question of making the right bets and enough bets.

After 30 years of handicapping, I have built up a reservoir of knowledge on my approach to the game. Some of what I have learned on my path to success may be helpful to you, but then again it may not. It depends upon your current level of success and your method of handicapping. There is more than one way to make a profit betting harness racing, and your way may be different from mine. However, for those who are beginners or intermediate handicappers, you may learn a few things that will improve your game.

One word of warning for those who are beginners, I have not taken the time to explain the basics of harness racing. This includes terminology. Most harness programs have a glossary and other basic knowledge you can learn from. There is also good information for beginners at the website of the United States Trotting
