This may not have been the bloodiest battle of the war but it was surely one of the most costly battles. It had its ups and downs starting with about 97,000 men for the Union and about 57,000 men for the confederates but, in the end it changed the rest of the war’s outcome. All it took was three .57 caliber bullets. This battle occurred on April 30, 1863 to May 6, 1863. As a result in the 7 days battle, it was a magnificent victory for the Confederacy. The Union had almost two times as many soldiers than the CSA. The leading commanders of the battle was General Joseph Hooker as the the commander of the Potomac for the Union and on the opposing side was Robert E. Lee. for the Confederacy. Yet, was he a good match with the almost undefeated up until this battle Robert E. Lee and his fellow officers. Their was 24,000 casualties in all and 14,000 of them were from the Union. This was the best victory that Lee got in all of the civil war. This battle was fought in and near Chancellorsville which is how it got its name. Hooker was not the brightest in this battle and lead them to their defeat. The climax of the fight is May 3 when Lee thrusted an attack on Hooker’s left behind troops.Another great part, was when Hooker split up his men and left a smaller amount of his troops at a nearby battle which was Fredricksburg. With only about four fifths of his army he attacked hooker when he was advancing and made Hooker withdraw his men. This was quite a motivation for Lee’s men.
