Ed Harri’s powerful biographical film “Pollock” is less like a documentary and turns out to be more of a real- life mystery. However as the movie proceeds one learns quite a bit about the strange and intriguing figure and his abstract modern art style of painting. Artist Jackson Pollock revolutionized American painting in the 1940s with his exciting abstract canvases that used dripped and splattered paint more structurally and meaningfully than one had imagined. Throughout the film a couple of questions arise and more or less are answered by the way Pollock behaves, like what it is to be a painter, what a painter is, how he paints and why he paints. Similarly the camera discreetly dances around him offering a visceral thrill as its art that's being made. Harris allows his viewers to feel a sense of exhilaration at the potential of this virgin space. It's a remarkable moment of insight into the artist's creative process. What I also found interesting about the movie was during one of Pollock’s interviews, where he was asked how he knows when he has finished the painting? His response to this was “How do you know when you’re finished making love?” I feel that painting for him is a very natural thing, it's a part of him and there is no definite end to it. It is what he is extremely passionate about and lives for. The beginning shot is of Pollock at the height of his success, giving an autograph to the woman with whom he would eventually die in a car crash. This scene sets in the mood of the movie, which then goes into flashback. It is the nine-year struggle, hardships shown that inspire the viewers. It introduces different characters that serve as a turning point in his life and without their help Pollock would be just an ordinary artist. Impotent rage, self doubt and drunkenness
