Colin Singleton is a scrawny nerdy teen who finds interest in obsessing over a very particular thing, or name: Katherine. He is a tall and intelligent person who spends his time studying and constructing anagrams. Anagrams are words constructed from other words. Because of this he has a very wide vocabulary. Collin has 2 people throughout the book who help him through his situations. Colin’s best friend is Hassan Harbish. Matter of fact, at the beginning he is Colin’s only friend. Hassan is Lebanese and practices the religion of Islam. Hassan is always there when Colin needs him. They are very dependent on each other also. Every single Katherine has broken his heart by leaving him. Especially the last Katherine who he calls K-19. Colin begins obsessing over designing a theorem to predict his future relationships to avoid getting his heart broken again. In this theorem he tries to predict who will be the “dumper” and who will be the “dumpee”. After several days of trying to construct formulas for this theorem, he realizes that it will not work for future relationships. But he finds out that he can use it for his past relationships. The beginning of the story takes place in Indiana. But as Colin and Hassan go on a road trip, they end up in Gutshot, Tennessee. This is where a majority of the story takes place. The setting of the story is important because it sets a curious mood with the characters.
