Being somebody nobody thought you could be is what many mountain climbers sa after they have conquered a huge mountain. 3 men with disabilities have climbed Mount Everest and I'm sure they have all said “be somebody nobody thought you could be.” Will Cross, Erik Weihenmayer, and Paul Hockey all have disabilities and has climbed Mount Everest. Will Cross is a climber that has Type 1 diabetes. Will was the first American with Type 1 diabetes to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Diabetes is a disease that affects your body's ability to produce or use insulin. When your body turns the food you eat into energy insulin is released to help transport this energy to the cells. Cross grew up in England and at the age of 9 found out that he had diabetes. To prevent his insulin from freezing when he climbed Everest, a student from Art Institute of Pittsburgh designed a pouch made from special material. This was difficult climb because he had to keep track of his sugar, his insulin, and his body in the freezing temperatures. Erik is the only blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 25, 2001. He finished climbing the Seven Summits in September 2002. His first big mountain that Erik climbed was Mount McKinley. Erik started to go blind from juvenile retinoschisis. He tried rock climbing and fond he was natural at scrambling up a face using his hands to find holes.
