Intro Many people don’t quite understand the “Pit Bull” but soon you will understand. Pit bull is not a breed. It is a generic term often used to describe all dogs with similar traits and characteristics often known to the public as “Pit Bulls”. This essay is for any owners of “pit bull” type dogs such as American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and pit mixes.
American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terriers, commonly known as “Pit Bulls”, are all breeds of dogs that are universally misunderstood. Pit Bulls are commonly seen as vicious, dangerous, and violent animals. Unfortunately, Pit Bulls are falling victim to dog racism. Over the years, Pit Bulls have gained a negative reputation, but why? For my research project, I want to address the common misconceptions that constantly follow the bully breed of dogs.
Pit Bulls are strong and fast, which made them ideal candidates for dog fighting. Once they were tied to the word “fight,” movies started to use Pit Bulls in scenes with violence and crime. Unnatural behaviors taught to these dogs caused them to be feared and hated by many, so many that they are now banned in nearly 700 US cities, including Miami-Dade County (ASPCA). Pit bulls; how dangerous are they really? I’m sure we’ve all heard about the bad reputation that pit bulls have. Maybe we haven´t all had a good experience with pit bulls. Sometimes there are stories on the news about attacks on people done by a pit bull, but not all dogs are bad. How dangerous are pit bulls really?
The term “Pit Bull” is used to describe a certain group of dogs with similar traits and characteristics, but it is not its own breed of dog. The breeds that this term refers to include the American Pit Bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and Pit mixes (Villalobos Rescue Center). Every day, Pit Bulls are being labeled as vicious, killers, beasts, and monsters. Any horrible name that you can think of, they have been called it. All of the breeds that make up this term are considered the most controversial breeds and it is a constant battle between both parties as to whether breed specific bans on the Pit Bull type of dogs should be enacted.
Across the nation animal shelters are flooded with unwanted or homeless dogs, 74% of them being pitbulls. It is strongly believed, by some, that animals are not born mean they are made mean. Many people like to jump to the conclusion that Pitbulls and similar dogs, are naturally mean, but in reality they make the best family pets if treated
Are pit bulls dangerous dogs or are they just stereotyped? When comparing all breeds of dog, pit bulls are a good choice for a family dog in spite of the common misconception about their aggressive and unpredictable behavior. Pit bulls are known for a reputation of being vicious and aggressive, but really pit bulls aren’t any more or less dangerous than other breeds. These misconceptions are usually a result of people being uneducated about pit bulls.
Due to media's false information about the pitbulls, many shelters put them down before giving anyone the chance to adopt them (BestFriends). Many people are forces people to give their beloved pets. Since 2017, 20 states have passed a contract against breed discrimination and has been working on increase the number but still people don't know that they can admit that the breed is the most kind, lovable breed to get to know. The pitbull is the most misunderstood when it comes to the media but pitbulls are like dragons but can be trained to be good. Pit bulls have been the target of breed specific legislation for years despite evidence claiming such laws do not diminish the number of overall dog attacks.
Before getting into persuading readers; they should know why pit bull breeds get such a bad rap, as well as where the breed came from. Owning a pitbull is smart move because they are good with people and children, obedient, and easy to train. The dogs are just so great with people depending on how they are raised and trained. The way humans behave is what leads up to “companion animal attacks” (Time). People are able to have good relationships with pit bulls though.

There is a negative stigma which follows certain breeds of dogs. Pit bulls for instance, are considered as a dangerous breed. In some cities such as Miami, they are banned and in many shelters, pit bull breeds are amongst the first to get euthanized. What people fail to realize is that dogs’ temperament is indicative of their owner and the care and training they are given.
It’s all how they are raised. I know a lot of people that have them. “My uncle for one has 2 pit bulls. They are very gentle and loving. Their names are Shadow and Dingo.
Pit bulls, should we ban them? You may know the American Pit Bull Terrier’s have been to bred to fight but this is not true. Pit bulls were not bred for fighting they were bred to work and herd cattle. They only got their bad reputation as fighting dog because of the owners who trained them to be mean and aggressive.
