These two articles are vastly different in topic, content, and style, which is why it serves as a great example of different rhetorical situations and how the different authors choose to persuade their audience. A rhetorical situation is the art or method of persuasion. Identifiable aspects of rhetoric involve the author or speakers’ P.A.C.T.: purpose, audience, context, and text. The methods used in order to persuade the audience persists of: logos (logic), ethos (credibility), and pathos (emotion). Persuasive pieces involve these methods, including the way the authors portray their writing through style and diction. This essay aims to compare the rhetorical situations of two different articles in order to explain my understanding of rhetoric.
Purpose
Purpose is an important aspect of an argument that defines the author’s motive, although some written works may not it explicitly written. Why is the author writing this piece? What are they trying to accomplish by publishing it? In the article “Male or Female? Hunt’s article was posted online so it targets a general audience, particularly for those that have internet access and speak English. It was posted on an online news source called The Guardian which has many different articles based on current news, sports, culture, and lifestyle. Due to the broad spectrum of news available from this site, Hunt’s article can be accessed by all kinds of people with internet access. Hunt’s article is about sexist community guidelines on instagram, therefore it was especially meant for anyone that understands the current social media and gender discriminatory problems in America today; including those affected by
