Writing Response 1.1 Choose one passage from the writer who interests you the most and write a one-page response to the paragraph using techniques of close reading Analysis of “Pamplona in July” by Ernest Hemingway “Pamplona in July” is a short essay that depicts the author – Hemingway’s visit to the Spanish town Pamplona during its annual World’s Series of Bull Fighting in July and the liveliness there due to the festival. The essay poses the vigorous atmosphere in Pamplona brought by the festival and the author’s liking of the event as its main statement. A distinctive aspect of this essay is its structure. The author furthers develop the scene of bullfight with short sentences, such as “Tosses [the picador] high…Bumping him with [bull’s] head…Worrying him with his horn” (Hemingway102). “The bull turned like a cat and charged Algabeno and Algabeno met him with the cape”; the use of anadiplosis - “…Algabeno and Algabeno…” – is obvious (Hemingway, 105). This exercise was used to highlight the reversal of roles in the game, which the picador Algabeno took away the bull’s once-powerful position. The author did it purportedly, because such change would accelerate the change and intensify the atmosphere of the fight. It grasped attention. A similar method, anaphora – repetition of the first work in previous lines – was also used in the passage “Then the bull with turn… Then he will toss… Then he picks up…” (Hemingway, 102). The effect is much similar to anadiplosis, as it creates the fluidity and intensity of the movement of the bull during the fight.
