Social conflicts have been a controversial topic that governments have been trying to keep under control at all cost, but unfortunately have had no luck. Not only do social conflicts affect people all over the world, but it can also affect family members, friends or people who we personally know in various ways. In an Opinion article titled, “Climate change is indeed a cause of social conflict” written for the Los Angeles Times by Solomon Hsiang, the chancellor’s associate professor of public policy at UC Berkeley and Marshall Burke, an assistant professor of earth system science at Stanford University, explores the possibilities of climate changes being the cause of social conflicts around the world. Marshall and Burke’s credibility is proven by giving us examples such as, Syria’s war and the drought becoming a larger problem when the number of deaths keep rising, Africa’s hot weather proving that a civil war is not impossible, Australia’s elevated domestic violence numbers and the United States rise of violent crimes such as rape and murder. Hsiang and Burke also demonstrate their credibility by stating they have: “studied many types of violence — including sports violence, murder, gang violence, riots and civil wars. What we find time and again, around the world and throughout human history, is that climatic events are a cause of social conflict. They are not the only cause, but in places where there is a risk of violence because of non-climate factors, climate changes can amplify this risk.” Both are also assistant professors for public policy and earth system sciences, making them knowledgeable of the topic. Regardless of all the evidence they have accumulated and the support of scientist, they are fighting to have their claims supported with scientific evidence. For the past decade, warnings have been given across the world that there would be severe climate changes. Think of California. We have been able to see the drastic changes first hand. In 2015, California lacked rain and the state was declared in a state of drought. Even after the occasional rain in 2016, California is still under state of emergency due to the ongoing lack of water. Hsiang and Burke analyze what this will do to our future generations and what kind of impact it will have on us. Of course, Marshall and Burke admit that climate changes are not the only contributor to the problem, but it can make boost the instability it creates.
