Research and studies have shown that when healthy lifestyle choices are introduced to children at a younger age, they are more likely to become lifelong behavior choices or just a natural way of life. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has done a lot of research on this and put out information for the public to use. A collaborative effort came up with the model of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) to combine with the whole child framework for use in school health.
There are 10 components to the WSCC model. They include: Health Education, Nutrition Environment and Services, Employee Wellness, Social and Emotional School Climate, Physical Environment, Health Services, Counseling Psychological, and Social Services, Community …show more content…

I feel that educators, staff, coaches, etc. can be some of the biggest and strongest role models to students within the school. If they’re making good and healthy choices and being examples to them, the students will hopefully follow that and develop those health skills as well. Another important area in the model is the Social and Emotional School Climate. This refers to the relationships between everyone involved and promoting not only student health but emotional and psychological growth. This is important because kids will learn better in a positive environment. This leads right in to the Physical Environment where the students feel safe. I believe most people do better and learn more when they feel comfortable. This could have to do with setting, sound, what is going on around the area and so on. Different business or groups can partner with schools to help create a broader base for not only resources but volunteers. I think that everyone benefits from this in one way or another. It helps to pull a lot of coordination together and make the resources stronger and more useful. Family Engagement is huge in this model in my opinion. I think it helps the students as well as the educators to have the support of the family. Everyone is committing and working toward the same goals for the health and learning of the students. It makes it more cohesive. Lastly Physical Education and Physical Activity is the base environment at school that helps direct students toward not only being healthy but learning to make healthy choices. It’s the foundation for a lot of health programs. It includes things like motor skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship as well as physical
