Literature can be considered a form of many others that were used to express thoughts and feelings of a person or even a society. There is many evidence to how so many different art and literary forms were used as a social commentary. Paintings, music and books are just a few examples of how it can be possible. In fact, there is an abundance of many things that showcase Social commentary, whether modern or old. To name a few, some books include The book thief, Pride and prejudice, A tale of two cities, Animal Farm, Also Music of various genres, even movies and TV shows, and that doesn’t even scratch the surface if it. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”. The use of so many dystopian elements in his book, conveyed Orwell’s personal views on totalitarianism clearly. He emphasized and illustrated many acts of dehumanization in society through the eyes of Winston, the main protagonist of the novel, as all the events are witnessed by him. Throughout the plot, Winston is depicted as the character that goes against the existent ideologies and the regime surrounding him, because he feels it’s wrong and has to be changed. Everything he goes through, illustrates perfectly the dystopian society. The oppression, the ban on individuality and natural instincts, the dehumanized state and of course the notorious Big Brother who can be seen as a character portraying various dictators, specifically Stalin. Winston had been living under the party’s rule and oppression miserably, he had even called the proles as the only hope that anyone could live freely without interference from the party as said in his quote "Only the proles are free", however despite not being monitored by a telescreen or following the same rules as people like Winston, the proles are still manipulated by the regime into suppressing into their roles in society by being occupied by meaningless ways of entertainment like gambling, betting and watching pornography.
