Nelly Dean continues to tell Mr. Lockwood the story. He is greatly interested in what happened to Heathcliff when he disappeared for a while. She knows the story because when He arrived home from this adventure, Heathcliff told her everything. Nelly requested Lockwood not to interrupt her story. She knows he will get a greater understanding of the experience if he listens the entire time.
Heathcliff decided to leave Wuthering Heights the day Catherine told him it would be degrading to marry him. She told him she was going to marry Edger Linton because he was of a higher class and was much smarter. One passenger who was far older than Heathcliff was very curious. This passenger’s name was never revealed. He began to question Heathcliff, making him very angry. Heathcliff became even ruder with the man, giving him false answers and joking about the questions. This account made for a very long and frustrating journey.
After a twelve day journey on the boat, all but one passenger arrived safely in America. The lone female on the ship died of a bad case of shingles on the sixth day. When the passengers stepped off the ship into America, all expressed great excitement except Heathcliff. He was very poor in the face and gloomy acting.
Heathcliff’s friend, the old man on the boat, noticed Heathcliff’s appearance looked very poor. The gentleman, who Heathcliff decided to call Hindle after his annoying brother, offered to bring Heathcliff to his home. Hindle tells Heathcliff he was in Yorkshire visiting his family members, and he questioned him on the boat because he reminded him of his son.
