World War I lasted from 1914-1918 and had a major effect on Britain. Tensions had been rising between European countries over foreign policies, but the war was triggered by the assassination of Austria’s Archduke Ferdinand. The war was between the Axis powers, which consisted of Austria, Germany, and Turkey, and the Allied powers: France, Britain, and Russia. Millions would end up dying because of the war. World War I would also result in an economic depression in Britain. The economic depression was a result of Britain going to direct taxes on property and income to fund the war. In the story “The Mark on the Wall”, Woolf discusses how possessions are lost over time. This can signify either emotional death or physical death as during the war many people either lost their lives, or belongings due to the depression. The loss of possessions can also be the loss of happy times, due to the changes in lifestyle caused by the violence war. In the story, Woolf describes a scene in which the narrators husband announces he is going to buy the newspaper. The narrators husband states, “Curse this war; God damn this war!” (Woolf 2149). This can show Woolf’s internal emotions about the war. The ending changes the whole demeanor of the story to one of desperation. The sense of desperation shows an emotional depression because of the war. Woolf’s writings were altered to express a stream of consciousness because of the war. Jeanette McVicker quotes Karen L. Levenback describing Woolf’s writing as a “war consciousness... the lived experience of war in the trenches as well as on the streets had been deconstructed and reconfigured in disturbing ways” (McVicker 503).
