Foreign policy is a government’s strategy in dealing with other nations. For the United States, foreign policy involves the idea of intervention outside of America in order to maintain a stable relationship and peace between independent nations. The United States also says that foreign policy is characterized as a constant fight to maintain peace through democracy. A democracy is a type of government essential for a country that is trying to respect and protect human rights. It emphasizes the idea of a “government for the people.” In a democracy, a nation is free to the interpretation and customs of people. It allows a system of voting and a favor for the majority. A democracy also emphasizes equal rights for anyone living inside the legal …show more content…

Democracy is handled best within a nation, not in a war outside of the country. This means that the United States spent the opening years or World War I in neutrality in order to focus on how to improve the economy during the Great Depression.In the beginning years of the war, the United States developed laws to continue trade with the Allies.The U.S was loaned over 2 billion dollars toward the allied powers and only about 27 million to Germany. The situations worsened for Germany as German U-Boats sank innocent American ships. After the sinking of the Lusitania, the Sussex pledge was passed to make Germany stop sinking American ships, as well as to keep the U.S out of the war. The final aspect that pushed for the American break of neutrality was the interception of the Zimmerman Telegram. This infuriated Americans because Germany was planning on getting Mexico on their side in order to attack the U.S. “On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to seek a Declaration of War against Germany in order that the world may be made safe for democracy” (Sixty-Fifth Congress). This says that in order to promote democracy to the rest of the world, the United States had to go to war against Germany.
