Wednesday Wars Respond to Literature Essay Have you ever read the book “The Wednesday Wars”, by Gary D. Schmidt? In “The Wednesday Wars”, the main character, Holling Hoodhood, seems to form opinions about people pretty quickly, especially Mrs.Baker, Holling’s new 7th teacher. This leads you to having the same opinion about certain characters in the book. However, you should never judge people based on first impressions. The world contains many people, you never do know who they really are and what they are capable of until you them.
The book has been called "The greatest war book that has yet been written" by Rodakteur Stohr. All Quiet on the Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, is about a young German soldier named Paul Baumer who is in World War 1. The book uses many motifs, which are repeating objects or ideas. The motif of brutality teaches the reader that war is full of horror by showing that people kill other people in a way they wouldn 't anywhere else. Two examples of this are when a man’s chin gets smashed away and when Kat smashes a man 's face with the butt of this rifle.
In the novel titled All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque depicts Corporal Himmelstoss as a cruel man who abuses and demeans the men under his command. There is no stated reason for this but after analyzing the book, it can be inferred that Himmelstoss treated the men in such a harsh manner because he is insecure, cowardly, and sadistic. Himmelstoss is described as “a small undersized fellow… [who] was in civil life a postman” (Remarque 23). Thus, Himmelstoss’ job is not that well-paying and he has an average physical appearance, being short and possessing a big moustache, so he makes up for what he lacks in looks and station by abusing his power.
Night mainly contains similes, metaphors and hyperbole. First, the simile that most stood out to me was “He had some seven hundred prisoners under his command, and they all loved him like a brother”(Wiesel,63). This simile, in a way, compares the officer to the other officers because it shows he treats his prisoners better. It also says that “Nobody had ever endured a blow or even an insult from him”(Wiesel, 63). So we know that he cares enough about those people not to hurt or insult them voluntarily.
“There comes a soldier, his bare feet are seen thro’ his worn out shoes, his legs nearly naked from the tatter’d remains of an only pair of stockings…. ” This is a quote from the diary of a man named Dr. Waldo. He stayed at a terrible place. The Continental Army came there with Washington during the winter of 1777.

The novel Tomorrow When The War Beganwas composed by John Marsden. The book underscores on the word valor and puts young people towards life gambling challenges. It is set in Australia, Wirawee and is based around youngsters leaving just to discover when they return from the trek the entire town is noiseless and none of their families and obvious. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be living your life in fear? Constantly being wanted, and living on the run and in fear only because you are a divergent? I have read the chapters 1-27 in the book Insurgent, in the beginning Tris and Tobias were on their way away from the city and away from the erudite, who were taking control. After they find out that the erudite are searching for them, they decide to take a train back to the center of the city and stay in the warehouse with a bunch of other divergent.
“In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” Anne grew up in one of the most harrowing times in history. Anne Frank was an inspiring human being. Anne has delivered multiple quotes, these quotes could be titled as brave, whimsical, or indifferent. Nevertheless, by far these are some of the most inspiring words that I have ever heard.
The memoir Night written by Holocaust survivor Eliezer Wiesel is a recollection of the Holocaust. In the memoir Eliezer describes his experience during the height of the Holocaust near the end of the second World War. A time of concentration camps and prejudice on Jews from the Germans/Nazis. In Eliezer’s memoir he uses literary devices to help bring his experience to life for the audience. Using similes, metaphors, irony, symbolism, imagery, and so much more.
As author Alex Morritt once said “The word 'friend' has become so utterly void of meaning in a world governed by social media. How can anyone truly claim to have eleven hundred friends ? In my book that would involve making time to meet at least three of them every day of the year.” This fascinating perspective on friendship is one that is exhibited by both Thomas Hardy’s poem “The Man he Killed” as well as Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front. Although not related to social media, both of these books dehumanize the terms “friends” to simple objects, portraying ideas on how allies are deemed allies and enemies are deemed opponents in war, even though this may not be the case if one was to meet them in real life.
Soldiers were not viewed as brave men risking their lives, and the war was seen as an unnecessary event. This type of mentality is seen in the novel with the perceptions of the soldiers. The narrator expresses the view of the time period when he states, “They were soldiers’ coats. Billy was the only one who had a coat from a dead civilian” (82). The meaning behind this is very crucial because it establishes a definite division between soldiers and civilians.
"The Luck of Roaring Camp" is a poignant short story written by Bret Harte, nineteenth-century master of the genre. In this realism tale set during the Californian gold rush era, the author successfully depicts how humanity can be concealed within a squalid and crude world. In it, a new-born child has a civilizing influence on men in more than one way: the tragedy of his birth brings the men together; he has the power to assemble them as a society, a culture. Secondly, the men become more polite, cordial towards one another. Thirdly, they have rites like all societies, giving a meaning to all lives in the camp.
After 7 long years that i have been a soldier in war I can finally come home. I am almost here i can’t wait to see my girls again, My beautiful wife and my now 9 year old daughter. It has been so hard in the war especially without them, i’ve lost so many friends right next to me in battle. It was one of the many horrible things that i wish didn’t happen in war. I joined the war in the first place because of the stupid “join or die!” thing.
The poem aims to glorify soldiers and certain aspects of war, it goes on to prove that in reality there really isn 't good vs bad on the battlefield, it 's just a man who "sees his children smile at him, he hears the bugle call, And only death can stop him now—he 's fighting for them all.", and this is our hidden meaning.
