My Dearest Mother,
I haven’t written to you in a long time, and I have reason for. I do miss you very much, although it busy out her in the army and I have not had any opportunity to write home in a while until now. I am going on all right up till now, it is fine in the trenches, well not really. We arrived at the trenches about 6 weeks ago and last week we move up to the front lines. When we did reach the trench it was half full of water and the floor was all mud. It’s not so simple to write during the war, I have many things to say, but not much time. So I haven’t slept in a couple of days and I also hadn’t had much to eat either, the tea and dog biscuits they’re not satisfying but will make due up till now, I once had meat, but that was just one lucky day. I didn’t do much though; the taste of meat was overthrown by the dreadful strong stench of the dead bodies lying around near me. Most of which are members of my platoon who are rotting away, and being eaten by swarms of large rats. It’s a painful sight but there’s nothing we can do. Four of my friends have been killed; just yesterday my chum next to me was killed by a German shell just instantly. He was truly a hero and he saved my life more than once, it was sad to see him go. I also did get bashed a while back but I’m well now. Some of the other members of my platoon had gotten what is called trench foot, swelling of the feet and frostbite.
