This can be seen throughout the book as Yanek tries to survive all that is thrown at him by the prison guards and the Nazis from Prisoner B-3087 written by Alan Gratz. Yanek the main character is living on Krakusa street when one day the Germans attack their town and all of them around it, eventually more and more people are being taken to the camps. One way to handle this difficulty is to believe you will get through it. Yanek shows belief when he is trying to get the bread from the guard that has too much bread to eat. Yanek tries to get close enough to grab the bread, but the guard turns to reveal that he is the worst guard that Yanek, Moonface. Yanek tells Moonface that he is a good worker and that he should not kill him. On page 230 Moonface gives in to Yanek’s reasoning, “...Moonface cut a hunk of bread off the loaf with his knife and tossed the bread to me.” Yanek shows belief that everyone has Kindness even if it was because he wanted to keep one of his best workers alive. In the book there is a scene that shows the anticipation of them all dying. That scene is when they are put into what they think are gas chambers but then when the faucets turned on they were surprised to not be dying from gas but being rained on by water. Yanek began to cry he came this far just to be killed but instead on page 129“...Water rained down on me. Freezing water so cold it made me scream. Water! Not gas! I was going to live!” After the water starts raining on them Yanek starts laughing as though this is all a big joke, he anticipated that he was going to die right there and now but he didn’t. Even though Yanek and the others were past giving up the Germans gave them hope even though the prisoners anticipated dying. Even though the Germans may not have known it but they gave all the prisoners hope even though they expected to die that
