Have you ever thought about the Demands of spending an extended amount of time with a tiger? Neither had Piscine Molitor Patel, the main character in The Life of Pi. However, Pi’s upbringing, his childhood religious curiosity combine with the fact that he was raised in his father’s zoo geared him toward the 227 days he spent alone in a lifeboat with an adult Bengal Tiger. As a child Pi’s parents were ever willing to teach him a valuable lesson. Soon after Pi was born his family moved to a zoo, the basis for most if not all of the lessons taught by his father. In the book his father’s zoo get a new tiger, being a curious young boy Pi sneaks in to see the tiger. As soon as his father hears of this he brings a live goat to the tiger’s enclosure and ties it up and make both Pi and his brother Ravi watch as the tiger comes in and pulls the goat through to bars of the cage. This demonstration was all to prove how dangerous a tiger, the same tiger he would be trapped on a lifeboat with, can be. By living in a zoo his parents unintentionally taught him an innumerable amount of lessons. In the book Pi tells about a predator - prey dependency between dogs and lion cubs, “ dogs are sometimes used as foster mothers for lion cubs. The only thing on any one’s mind when trapped in a lifeboat with a tiger. However, for someone that would know so much about wild animals living with a tiger would be easier than most. “ I had a chance so long as he didn’t sense me. If he did, he would kill me right away.” The fact that he knew that is testament to his knowledge of the things it would take to live with a tiger for 227 days. However on the other hand if we take into account that the tiger was a hidden side of himself that his mind subconsciously created, he knew that a tiger would make a believable replacement for the savage side of himself that he refused to think could
