Bullying is a common issue found in all schools. Bullying is using strength or power to scare/intimidate someone, to gain further power or to get something the bully wants. According to Dan Olweus, bullying "poisons the educational environment and affects the learning of every child." It is a serious matter that can affect student’s health and wellbeing. Bullying is happening every day, DoSomething found that “Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.” This is an alarming issue that can lead to anxiety, paranoia, depression and many different consequences. These surveys will inform us of what exactly is taking place when we can’t witness it ourselves, and breakdown exactly what we need to know in order to make a change. The results will be analyzed and discussed further throughout this report. To create the surveys, the Year 11 Health class worked together to form questions that would be relevant to receiving the data they needed from year levels 7, 8, and 9. Once the surveys were completed, groups were sent to different classes around the school for them to be completed. In the answers, it was found that in Years 7, 8 and 9 the most common type of bullying is verbal. Kellie Holly of HealthyPlace.com stated the psychological effects of verbal bullying can include “fear and anxiety, depression, stress and PTSD, intrusive memories, memory gap disorders, sleep or eating problems, hyper-vigilance and exaggerated startle responses, irritability, anger issues, alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, self-mutilation, and assaultive behaviors.” These consequences are serious issues and can affect people for the rest of their lives. It is important to evaluate what we did and what could have been done to enhance our achievement. As a class, to improve the cohesiveness of the workshop we need to practice the entire run-through of our plan to increase our confidence. Saga Briggs (2014) states “Decades of research support the notion that believing in your ability to do something enhances your ability to do it.” Applying that theory to our workshop, if we believe that we can achieve a successful workshop, then we will be more successful.
