“Help!” Yelled Melba as she was kicked and punched to the ground by a white boy. This dreadful even happens in Warriors Don’t Cry. Warriors Don’t Cry is a book by Melba about herself, a girl named Melba Pattillo Beals. Melba is a Negro who lives in Little Rock, Arkansas and is 15 years old. She grew up going to Horace Mann a “Colored” school that only people with black skin could go to. Melba decided that it was not fair, she wanted to go to school with the white kids. “Tonight i feel love for my own people. Everybody tried to make us happy. There is the tiniest flicker of hope and joy inside me.”(Beals p. 153) This quote is her triumph over all of the challenges she has gone through. Her heart still blazes on with joy and hope for the better tomorrow. Melba has gone through so much, but she still manages to keep a “flicker” of hope inside her burning heart. My name is Link, I’ll call you later.”(Beals p. 172) This quote is a great example of an ally because Link is a random white boy who Melba thinks is like all the others, but he really isn't. Link gives her his car keys and tells her to escape from the boys who want to kill her. Later he tells her secrets about traps that the white kids had set up and warn her where not to go. Another example of an ally is. “Without my grandmother India Anette Peyton , I would not have survived my year at Central High.”(Beals p. 84-85) Melba’s grandmother played a big role in her childhood. She loved her and cared for her as she went through high school. Her grandmother gave her hope and inspiration, advice and warning, and most of all love. She cared for Melba so much and hated all of the torture that the black people
