The culture of the Laguna Pueblo people does not view you as different no matter what. Everyone is beautiful, not only is there no judgment, there is a community that comes together based on the values of each other. Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit focuses on the aspect of beauty, cultural identity, and cultural inheritance. These central ideas provide the story with a base that is relatable to the audience and structures the story in a way that makes this story's purpose clear.
In Silko's early life she has been viewed as different because of her looks coming from an interracial family. She first-hand experiences racism when tourist come by to take pictures with her class but do not want her in the movie because she does not look …show more content…

A significant impact on Silko is her grandmother. She begins to tell Silko a story about a woman who saves her village from a drought by getting water for her village using courage and perseverance. This propels Silko's understanding about the concepts her village teaches and makes her into a stronger more sympathetic character. “Beauty was as much a feeling of harmony as it was a visual, aural, or sensual effect.”(Silko 64) Also, her village is very welcoming to anybody. She describes a man that shows up in her village dressed very differently, but this has no effect, he is welcomed with open arms. “When I was growing up there was a young man from a nearby village who wore nail polish and women's blouses and permed his hair.”(Silko 64) Like a reflection in paragraph 12, Silko also describes the white culture and her culture “Western culture are codes for determining social status. People no longer hide their face-lifts, and they discuss their liposuctions because the point of the procedures is not just cosmetic, it is social.”(Silko 65) At the end of the story, Silko says the title of the book to the audience again. “For these qualities of the spirit, Yellow Woman and all women are beautiful”(Silko 72) Having this at the end of the story asks you do you remember what you read and did it sink in.
